Recovering a boat onto the ship is a secondary concern, and the reason why it is so dangerous, and the cause of the most injuries to mariners. Lifeboats are designed to do one thing: take people away from a ship. Opening the tender platforms in an open seaway is an invitation to flooding the ship, and anyone who has experienced tendering knows how difficult it can be to get from the boat to the large platform in even small waves. Even a cruise ship would find it difficult to get passengers from a boat onto the ship. Imagine the average cruise ship passenger hauling themselves up a ladder like this, while being slammed against the side of the ship, for 30-40'. Or the ship could use a Jacob's ladder (the rope ladder that pilots use to board the ship). A cargo ship has high sides, and using the accommodation ladder (the aluminum stairs that can be lowered and raised along the side of the ship) is difficult and dangerous in a seaway as the ladder can be damaged by swinging against the ship due to rolling, the boat can be damaged from hitting the ladder, or being hit by the swinging ladder, and the passengers could be hurt or lost trying to get from a pitching, rolling boat to a 2' x 2' platform. The problem is not with the ship being equipped to take on the passengers, it is how do you get the passengers from the boats to the ship. However I started thinking about TA sailings, the only other ships that might be nearby are cargo ships and they are not exactly equiped to take on hundreds of passengers. A few years I thought about this in the Caribbean not as much a concern with all of the ships doing similiar intineries. The Harmony life boats seem to have a different design where the two level seating is more apparent.Ībout it taking days for a ship capable taking you on. In regards the Oasis, it took me a bit to figure out it was two level seating. And if you get into a boat in the ocean, it can be days before a ship capable of taking you from the boat in a safe and secure manner may show up on scene. Food and water are very limited on boats as well: 2500 calories of food per person, and 3 liters of water per person. Other boats use the big blue toilet outside the boat. Yes, the Oasis boats have a toilet, but it isn't a "bathroom", it is out in the open. Realize that if you ever get into a lifeboat, it is for one reason, to save your life, so "comfort" (what a tight squeeze), and modesty (where do I go to the bathroom?) go out the window. The davit launched rafts are slower to deploy, so they are not counted towards passenger capacity. These systems meet the requirement to be able to evacuate 500 persons within 30 minutes. Some ships, notably Princess, and some NCL, use the MES systems for passengers as well. The "mega" lifeboats on Oasis class have dual level seating, where the people on the upper level drape their legs over the shoulders of those on the lower level. Lifeboat capacity is based on a 75 kg (165 lb) person, and the seating area is 17" wide (butt width) and 24" from knees to butt. The crew use davit launched 65 man life rafts or Marine Evacuation Systems (MES), which are 100-150 man rafts with an inflatable chute to get down to the raft. Again using the 8500 number, the required amount of total life saving equipment is 10,625. So, there is enough lifeboat capacity for all passengers. With 16 crew per boat, that comes out to a lifeboat capacity of 6663. Now, using your number of 8500 total souls onboard Oasis, 75% is 6375, so having a lifeboat capacity of 6600 is more than required. There must be life saving equipment (boats, rafts, MES systems) totaling 125% of all souls onboard. If you noticed the large canisters lined up along with the life boats thats where the other, hopefully crew, 1800 are put.ĭoes it have enough? Yes, per SOLAS, there only needs to be lifeboats for 75% of all souls onboard. That means that there are around 1,850 people without the lifeboats which Royal Caribbean raves about. Oasis has a total maximum population of around 8,500 when you count its capacity of around 6,300 passengers and 2,200 crew members. Not only would it be a extremely tight fit but there is not enough room for everyone.ġ8 lifeboats with a capacity of 370 equals only 6,660 people.

Titch is genial, slightly useless and lives in fear of his domineering father, Dan. Initially, we meet the petite Irene Bobs, a spunkily irrepressible young woman married to the equally diminutive Titch. The novel is told in alternating first-person voices. Then something changed: “You can’t be a white Australian writer and spend your whole life ignoring the greatest, most important aspect of our history, and that is that we – I – have been the beneficiaries of a genocide.” In a recent interview in the Australian, he said that he’d always felt that it was not the place of a white writer to tell this tale. It seems strange at first that Carey – surely Australia’s greatest living novelist, even if he hasn’t dwelled there for decades – has taken so long to get around to the subject. Then there’s Francis Spufford’s Golden Hill, whose concluding revelation about one of the characters’ racial identities does what all good end-of-book twists ought to, shedding new light on the entire novel.Ī Long Way from Home, Peter Carey’s 14th novel, uses the story of a light-skinned Indigenous Australian who has been brought up white to address the country’s brutal history of racism. More recently, we’ve had Philip Roth’s The Human Stain, in which the African American Coleman Silk attempts to pass for a Jewish academic. Nella Larsen’s 1929 novel, Passing, is a near-forgotten classic, telling of two mixed-race women, Clare and Irene, who identify as white and black respectively. Previously called Suitcase Fusion, I used it for years (literally 10 years or more) and it was always pretty reliable. These first two I’ve used myself so I’m comfortable recommending them to you.ĬONNECT FONTS DESKTOP (Mac/Windows) = $108+ They also deactivate when you shut down your computer, so it will start fresh on reboot. Good font managers will only activate fonts used in the documents you open and deactivate them either when you close that document or quit the app you were using. When you start to collect a lot more fonts than what initially came on your computer, those fonts start to slow down your computer because it has them active & running in the background all the time, for every application, even when it’s not necessary. Ok, so what does font management software do –you ask? It’s typically an app that handles turning fonts ON and OFF for you so that they’re not ALL constantly running in the background of your computer. ❷ Font management software What the hell is a font manager? Once you’re all done (prepare to spend some time on this if you have a few hundred/thousand files to go through!), then it’s time to move onto Tip #2! (Don’t recognize these style names? Check out my free Font Pairing Guide for visuals on what these different styles look like, at a glance!) My biggest folders tend to be Script, Serif, and Sans Serif, so those each have multiple style folder groups inside the main genre folder. Do the same with any folder that starts collecting more than you’d want to scroll through at any given time. For example, scripts can be further organized into Brush, Calligraphy, Formal, Casual, Handwritten, Painted, Retro, etc. If you end up having TONS of fonts in any particular genre/style, you can further organize them into different types of that genre. (To make this easy, I open 2 Finder windows side by side just drag & drop!) Create a new folder, INSIDE your main font folder (the one you just created if you didn’t already have one), and label it something like “serif” or “handwritten.” Repeat the process for every style you think you have, then look at every font file and move it into the genre folder it’s closest to. I suggest doing this is by genre or style. Let’s get ‘em organized now that they’re all in one place! (Okay, so you don’t have to be as excited about organization as I am, but let’s get started anyway. I keep mine in my Documents for easy access, but you can choose where you want to keep yours. Designers end up having sooooo many fonts. They were large, muscular dogs, some with tri-colored markings, though red/white and black/tan coloring were also prevalent. By the 19th century, the ancestors of the modern Swissy were widely used in central Europe by farmers, and tradesmen, and were often referred to as, Metzgerhunde, or “Butcher’s Dogs”. Consequently, a group of dogs bred to perform a certain function took the name of that activity, such as Viehhunde, or cattle dog. Selective breeding was more commonly based on the dog’s ability to perform a particular function, such as pulling loads or guarding, rather than on any acknowledged breed standard. The early ancestors of the Swissy were used by farmers, herdsmen, and merchants in central Europe. Bernard, and Bernese Mountain Dog, are largely descended from the Roman Mollasian. As a result, several breeds, including the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, St. Whether or not a large breed was already in existence at the time of the Roman invasion of the Alpine regions, it seems clear that the Roman dogs would have been bred with these dogs. Yet a third possibility is that a large breed was indigenous to central Europeas far back as the Neolithic period. 1100 B.C.) brought a large breed of dog with them to settlements in Spain, and that these dogs later migrated eastward to influence the development of the Spanish Mastiff, Great Pyrenees, Dogue de Bordeaux, and eventually the large Swiss breeds. However, a second theory holds that the Phoenicians (c. The most popular theory states the dogs are descended from the Mollasian, a large Mastiff-type dog that accompanied the Roman Legions on their invasion of the Alpsin the 1st century B.C. There are several theories regarding the ancient origins of the Swiss Sennenhund breeds. The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is considered the oldest of the Swiss breeds and was instrumental in the early development of both the St. Still, I wish it would be released so someone else could translate it. I’m still struggling with Long Covid problems, but since I seem to have enough mental stamina to do a little writing or even translation most days, I really want to take advantage of that. I’m currently working on that last one, but if anyone wants to help with any of the others, let me know. In the Japanese version, Mozu speaks with a Kansai accent, which is used in much the same way as a Southern US accent might be used here in North America. I tried to get that across as best I could. Mozu’s accent is an important aspect of this conversation, which is a bit of a problem because her accent in the English version doesn’t vary much from everyone else. In the last year and a half I’ve been dabbling into writing fanfiction again, and decided it was time to try to tackle translation! Just….it now takes me a week or more what I used to be able to do in a single day, but hey, that’s better than simply doing nothing, right? Well, it’s nice to post again after a few years! I’m still grappling with the effects of an intense form of chronic fatigue and numerous other problems that have wrecked my health and made me a complete homebound invalid since I got Covid-19 back in 2020, but over the last year or so I think I have learned to cope with my limits a little better. Hoshidan Festival: Mozu and Ophelia Parent-Child Conversation In 1955, Brubeck signed with Columbia Records, then America's most prestigious record company, and his first album for the label, Brubeck Time, appeared several months later. Brubeck and the Quartet had become popular enough to be the subject of a Novemcover story in Time Magazine, only the second time that accolade had been bestowed on a jazz musician (Louis Armstrong made the cover in 1949). While the Quartet's rhythm section would shift repeatedly over the next several years, in 1956 Joe Morello became their permanent drummer, and in 1958, Eugene Wright took over as bassist.īy this time, Brubeck's fame had spread far beyond Northern California Brubeck's recordings for Fantasy had racked up strong reviews and impressive sales, and along with regular performances at jazz clubs, the Quartet began playing frequent concerts at college campuses across the country, exposing their music to a new and enthusiastic audience that embraced their innovative approach. In 1951, the Dave Brubeck Quartet made their debut, with the pianist joined by Paul Desmond on alto sax Desmond's easygoing but adventurous approach was an ideal match for Brubeck. Brubeck made his first commercial recordings with this trio for California's Fantasy Records, and while he developed a following in the San Francisco Bay Area, a back injury Brubeck received during a swimming accident prevented him from performing for several months and led him to restructure his group. However, the Octet's music was a bit too adventurous for the average jazz fan at the time, and Brubeck moved on to a more streamlined trio with Cal Tjader on vibes and percussion and Ron Crotty on bass. In 1947, Brubeck formed a band with several other Mills College students, the Dave Brubeck Octet. Unlike many composers in art music, Milhaud had a keen appreciation for jazz, and Brubeck began incorporating many of Milhaud's ideas about unusual time signatures and polytonality into his jazz pieces. Brubeck was honorably discharged in 1946, and enrolled at Mills College in Oakland, California, where he studied under the French composer Darius Milhaud. Patton, and would have fought in the Battle of the Bulge had he not been asked to play piano in a Red Cross show for the troops.īrubeck was requested to put together a jazz band with his fellow soldiers, and he formed a combo called "the Wolfpack," a multi-racial ensemble at a time when the military was still largely segregated. Brubeck left college as World War II was in full swing, and he was soon drafted into the Army he served under Gen. Brubeck followed this advice and graduated in 1942, though several of his instructors were shocked to learn that he still couldn't read music. However, after enrolling in the College of the Pacific in Stockton, California, Brubeck played piano in local night spots to help pay his way, and his enthusiasm for performing was such that one of his professors suggested he would be better off studying music. As a teenager, Brubeck was passionate about music and performed with a local dance band in his spare time, but he planned to follow a more practical career path and study veterinary medicine. His father worked as a cattle rancher, and in 1932, his family moved from Concord to a 45,000-acre spread near the foothills of the Sierras. Brubeck showed an initial reluctance to learn to read music, but his natural facility for the keyboard and his ability to pick up melodies by ear allowed him to keep this a secret for several years. David Warren Brubeck was born in Concord, California on December 6, 1920.īrubeck grew up surrounded by music - his mother was a classically trained pianist and his two older brothers would become professional musicians - and he began receiving piano lessons when he was four years old. At a time when the cooler sounds of West Coast jazz began to dominate the public face of the music, Brubeck proved there was an audience for the style far beyond the confines of the in-crowd, and with his emphasis on unusual time signatures and adventurous tonalities, Brubeck showed that ambitious and challenging music could still be accessible.Īnd as rock & roll began to dominate the landscape of popular music at the dawn of the '60s, Brubeck enjoyed some of his greatest commercial and critical success, expanding the audience for jazz and making it hip with young adults and college students. In the 1950s and '60s, few American jazz artists were as influential, and fewer still were as popular, as Dave Brubeck. The pianist and "Take Five" creator was one of the great post-bop jazz innovators of the 1950s. Make sure that the "Live View exposure simulation" feature is enabled in the camera body. Now that you understand Live View exposure will rarely be 100% accurate, here's what you can do to make it as accurate as possible. That's why you should always use either the "Preview" or the "Fast preview" function of Helicon Remote to check the actual exposure before proceeding with the shoot. Camera manufacturers use certain tricks to emulate the actual exposure (with varying success), but the fact is that the exposure time cannot be accurately applied in Live View mode (because unlike the actual shot, the shutter isn't triggered for each Live View frame). Q: How to configure Helicon Remote to save images to the memory card instead of downloading them to a computer or tablet?Ī: It is normal for Live View image to have the exposure different from the one on actual shots. That means you should generally connect the camera first, close all pop-ups and only then start Remote. Pay attention to programs that open up automatically when you connect the camera (autoplay menu, image import tool etc.) and close them prior to starting Remote. A system-wide lockup is also a possibility (if that happened, just turn the camera off or pull out its USB plug to regain control of your computer). Helicon Remote and Lightroom/Photos/Autoplay menu on Windows/Explorer/Gallery/you name it), all kinds of errors may occur to one or both programs. If two such pieces of software are active at the same time (e. Make sure no other camera related software is running. If the prompt does show up, but Helicon Remote still doesn't detect the camera, please follow these troubleshooting recommendations: Alternatively, if your Android is rooted you may try this tool (the "Fix" button), which sometimes helps: It can be solved by installing a custom Android ROM (like CyanogenMod), but you only should do that if you have some understanding of the process. If a cursor does appear but the camera is not detected, it means that Android is configured to detect some kinds of devices and not others, and cameras didn't make it to the white list. If it doesn't, then either your adapter is not OTG, or your device has no USB host hardware, or Android has no USB support. A mouse cursor should appear on the screen. Connect a USB mouse instead of the camera. If your adapter conforms to the description, it still may be wrong (OTG adapter has a special pin layout). If it's a long cable and not just a small adapter - it's most likely wrong. If your adapter is different - it's wrong. It's an adapter with micro USB plug on one end and USB A (full-size) socket on the other (unless usbport on your device is not micro USB, like on some Samsung tablets). Make sure you are using a USB OTG adapter. In this case, please check the following: If there's no prompt, it's safe to say the problem is not with Helicon Remote app itself. On Android, there should be a pop-up prompt when you connect the camera and it turn it on (the prompt asks which app to launch to handle the camera). If the system detects your camera and Helicon Remote does not - send a bug report (menu -> Help -> Report a bug on Windows / Mac, menu -> Feedback -> Report a bug on Android). A: Make sure that operating system itself detects the camera. |
